Absence Management: Key Issues and Vendors

February 2016 - In recent years, a complex array of regulatory changes at both the federal and state levels have increased the challenges facing employers as they look to manage benefit programs while assuring compliance. The challenges associated with this are frequently correlated with the size of the affected employer, given that they need to be able to manage these programs at any given time within a geographic jurisdiction while also needing to be prepared to address employee movement, which may introduce conflicts and contradictions in the relevant employment rules.

Addressing these issues has led to a series of commercial capabilities which fall into the category known as leave and absence management solutions. As this space has evolved it has opened new opportunities for both solution providers who develop the underlying software as well as companies (e.g., both TPAs and insurance carriers) that make it part of their offering. In this executive brief we explore the issues and options available to carrier IT organizations as they frame their go-forward business strategies. This remains an evolving space which carriers will want to be mindful of as they respond to market demands in both the group and voluntary benefits arenas.
